Inspiration

Since nobody in our group had ever participated in a hackathon before Cypher VIII, we wanted to make something which encapsulates our experiences as students at William & Mary. We didn’t plan to stay up all Saturday night making a finished product but I guess we’re here now.

What it does

We built a top-down RPG in Unity to be deployed on our website using WebGL. This game is based on the fictional school of Willem and Mike, a parody of William & Mary. In Willem and Mike, the player character is UNDECLARED and trying to meet up with their MAJOR ADVISOR.

How we built it

We built this project on Unity, so it would be deployable with WebGL. Everything from the C# scripting to the art assets and sounds were created and recorded at the hackathon by our own team. The pixel art was created using online tools, and the music was created using Ableton Live utilizing background experience

Challenges we ran into

This project gave us mountains of issues, from fighting against Unity to get it to do what we wanted, to managing countless merging errors from our Git repository, to navigating increasingly complex code while we were already exhausted. We managed to jump over each hurdle through sheer determination to make our first Hackathon as successful as reasonably possible.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • All pixel art is our own (excluding the font)
  • All music is our own
  • Both the music and art were created during and for the competition
  • All game background audio was recorded during the competition
  • All game logic is our own
  • Game is hosted on a Github Pages website deployed with Unity’s WebGL mode
  • Bought a domain/setup nameservers so that our game could be accessible from https://playwillem.app

What we learned

Learned how to use Git version control with Unity to support group collaboration. We learned how to create expressive pixel art despite lacking any background in the visual arts We learned how to work diligently despite exhaustion
