WildScape: Our Journey to Empower Wildlife Conservation
🌿 Inspiration
Our journey with WildScape began from a profound observation: the escalating celestial damages and the relentless destruction of natural habitats, leaving countless wildlife species without a true home. Witnessing the silent suffering of animals and the rapid degradation of their ecosystems ignited a deep sense of urgency within us. We realized that while many care about wildlife, there's often a disconnect between awareness and actionable impact. This project was born from the desire to bridge that gap, transforming passive concern into active participation in conservation efforts. We envisioned a platform that not only educates and inspires but also directly empowers individuals to contribute to the preservation of our planet's precious biodiversity.

🛠️ How We Built It
Our development process for WildScape began with a clear, albeit small, vision of the core user flow: engage, learn, contribute. We started by sketching out the main user journeys, focusing on how users would interact with content, earn rewards, and ultimately support conservation.
The project was built using a modern and robust tech stack:
- Frontend: We leveraged React with TypeScript for a dynamic and type-safe user interface. Tailwind CSS was instrumental in rapidly building a beautiful, responsive, and highly customizable design, ensuring a consistent and immersive visual experience across all devices. Lucide React provided a rich library of icons, perfectly complementing our aesthetic without the need for additional UI packages.
- Backend: Supabase served as our comprehensive backend solution, providing a powerful PostgreSQL database, custom authentication, and the ability to deploy serverless Edge Functions. This allowed us to manage user data, subscriptions, payments, and quiz results efficiently and securely.
- AI Integration: The Google Gemini API was integrated to power our intelligent WildScapeBot, enabling natural language interactions and providing users with expert knowledge on wildlife.
- Payment Processing: We integrated Razorpay for secure and seamless subscription payments, allowing users to easily upgrade their plans and unlock premium features.
- Email System: For our daily news alerts, we implemented an SMTP email system via Supabase Edge Functions, ensuring reliable and secure delivery of critical wildlife updates.
We adopted an iterative development approach, continuously refining features based on our evolving vision and testing. Each component, from the authentication flow to the Carbon Coin system, was meticulously crafted to ensure a smooth and engaging user experience.
🚧 Challenges We Ran Into
Building WildScape presented several significant challenges, pushing our technical boundaries and problem-solving skills:
- Razorpay Integration (especially Test Mode): Integrating Razorpay, particularly in its test mode, proved to be a complex hurdle. Ensuring the payment flow was correctly initiated, processed, and that the callbacks were handled reliably for updating user subscriptions and carbon coin balances required meticulous debugging and a deep understanding of the payment gateway's API.
- Supabase RLS and RPC Functions: Working with Supabase's Row Level Security (RLS) policies and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) functions was a steep learning curve. We needed to carefully design our database schema and RPC functions to bypass RLS for specific administrative and backend operations (like user registration, login, and carbon coin deductions) while maintaining strict security for user data. This involved extensive testing to ensure data integrity and prevent unauthorized access.
- Dynamic Content and Permissions: Dynamically serving content and features based on user subscription tiers and earned Carbon Coins added layers of complexity to the frontend logic and backend data retrieval. Ensuring that users only accessed content they were entitled to, and that their Carbon Coin balances were accurately reflected and deducted, required robust state management and real-time data synchronization.
- Email System Reliability: Setting up a reliable SMTP email system via Supabase Edge Functions for daily news alerts involved configuring environment variables, handling external API calls (NewsData.io), and ensuring consistent email delivery, which can be prone to network issues or API rate limits.
✨ Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
Despite the challenges, we are incredibly proud of several key accomplishments:
- Seamless User Engagement: We successfully created an intuitive and visually appealing platform that encourages users to engage deeply with wildlife content and conservation efforts.
- Functional Subscription Model: The implementation of a robust subscription system with Razorpay, seamlessly integrating payments with user permissions and feature access, is a major achievement.
- Impactful Carbon Coin System: The innovative Carbon Coin system, which directly links user engagement to tangible conservation contributions (like sanctuary tickets), is a core element we are very proud of. It transforms passive consumption into active participation.
- AI-Powered Education: The integration of WildScapeBot, providing instant and accurate wildlife information, enhances the educational value of the platform significantly.
- Comprehensive Admin Panel: The functional admin panel for managing users and email campaigns demonstrates the platform's scalability and administrative capabilities.
- Contributing to Conservation: Ultimately, we are most proud of building a platform that has the potential to make a real difference in wildlife conservation by fostering a community of informed and active supporters.
📚 What We Learned
