Inspiration
We wanted to make exploring nature more fun and help people learn about the world around them.
What it does
WildLens identifies plants, birds, and insects from photos. It also provides facts, lookalike detection, and suggestions on what to observe next.
How we built it
We built WildLens using React, FastAPI, and AI models, with a focus on open-weight models and local inference. We also added voice features to make it easier to use.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the AI identification and voice assistant to work smoothly was challenging. We also had to deal with limited resources and debugging issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of building a working nature exploration app with AI-powered identification and features that encourage people to explore nature.
What we learned
We learned how to integrate AI models into a web app, connect the frontend and backend, and solve real-world development problems.
What's next for WildLens
We want to improve identification accuracy, make offline usage better, and add more species and features to help people discover nature.
