Living near the mountains and encountering a multitude of animals in our day-to-day lives inspired us to develop the Wild Watch Animal Recognition app. Our close interaction with wildlife, combined with our concerns for the environment and the well-being of multiple animal species, fueled our determination to create a tool that could benefit both humans and animals alike.
Throughout the development process, we learned the importance of leveraging technology to address real-world challenges, such as wildlife conservation and human-animal interactions. We discovered the power of AI and machine learning in facilitating species identification and promoting coexistence between humans and wildlife.
Building the Wild Watch app involved several key steps. Initially, we gathered inspiration and insights from our experiences living near the mountains and observing various animal species. We then conducted extensive research to understand the existing technologies and methodologies for wildlife identification and conservation.
Data collection posed a significant challenge, as obtaining a diverse and comprehensive dataset of animal images required thorough exploration of online sources dedicated to wildlife photography and research. Additionally, ensuring the accuracy and relevance of the data necessitated continuous updates and expansions to incorporate new species and research findings.
Implementing AI for facial recognition of animals involved selecting suitable models, training them on the collected dataset, and integrating them into the mobile application. We leveraged advanced AI learning techniques to analyze not only facial features but also behaviors and characteristics of animals captured in images, enhancing the app's ability to accurately identify species.
One of the primary challenges we faced was the development of a robust threat assessment system. Assessing the potential danger posed by different animal species required careful consideration of various factors, including aggression, venomousness, and size. Implementing a proactive warning system to alert users to significant threats was crucial for promoting user safety and preventing human-animal conflicts.
Despite the challenges encountered during the development process, the Wild Watch Animal Recognition app emerged as a powerful tool for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and conservationists. By fostering awareness, promoting safety, and enhancing understanding of wildlife ecology and behavior, the app contributes to a harmonious coexistence between humans and animals in mountainous regions and beyond
