Inspiration

I've made many stories. From middle school until now, I wrote stories based on my experiences as a quirky, neurodivergent person. By making a visual novel, I can finally channel these energies to an audience.

What it does

"Wild Wand" is a visual novel meant to encourage and inspire quirky people to continue pursuing their passions and interests, even if they come across as eccentric. With a variated, open end, Astra's future is dependent on how much work she puts into her studies, even if she's not passionate about it. However, as she is quite bright, players get the opportunity to explore the world. This story is an allegory for living as a person who is neurodiverse, and Astra is written to fit that label.

How I built it

"Wild Wand" is made using Ren'Py, a visual novel engine best known for the development of the well-known psychological horror game "Doki! Doki! Literature Club". Atom was the text editor I used to write the code. MuseScore and Audacity were both used to make and edit original soundtrack. Pixlr E was the source I used to create character assets, backgrounds, items, and special effects.

Challenges I ran into

Time constraints! I hugely underestimated the time a visual novel would take! As such, the story isn't as long or as deep as I would've liked it to be. Additionally, creating the character assets were challenging, as I am not good at drawing at all. Building the Ren'Py game and making a video onto YouTube was also lengthier than expected. *For some reason, my original text got deleted, so this is paraphrased.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm impressed I managed to produce a brief visual novel game! This is the first one I'm formally publishing, and I have plans to make even bigger projects in the future.

What I learned

Visual novels are a lot of work! From coding to making music as well as building a world and an engaging character, balancing these elements is crucial.

What's next for Wild Wand - A Visual Novel

There's still a lot to explore in Thermice! I might build upon Astra's story, or if I don't feel like the world works, I can use her character into a bigger, more ambitious story that's floating in my mind right now!

*Also, if I was supposed to use a sponsor source, oops. Disregard this submission because I might have missed something from the intro as I couldn't be present.
