Problem and Solution
WildEyes is a new, innovative approach to solve the issue of uneducation of the natural world and an underappreciation of outside environments – as people spend hours and hours aimlessly glued onto their phones, missing the beauty and nature of things right in front of them. WildEyes is a reimagination of the common children's game “I spy”, where surroundings are turned into a medium for learning and discovery. It solves the problems of uneducation and underappreciation as it encourages players to slow down and immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world and connect with nature. Also, through AI generating riddles, it employs a sense of communication, as it bridges the gap between humans and nature. This fits with the overarching theme of Into the Mountains, as per our goals, WildEyes captures the spirit of exploration and curiosity, turning every outdoor experience into a small adventure. It transforms learning and nature into fun.
Our Story
Building WildEyes taught us the importance of responsible technology — how innovation can be used to reconnect rather than disconnect people. We learned about analyzing real-world images and identifying objects, natural language generation, and user experience design
We built WildEyes by designing a simple, intuitive interface using HTML, CSS and JS, focusing on accessibility and minimal distraction for the frontend. The backend was built with Flask, which connects to an AI model that analyzes uploaded images and identifies natural objects. We also used an image classification API to detect objects in nature photos, and a language model that generates a clever, nature-themed riddle related to that object.
Some issues that we ran into were integrating multiple AI systems seamlessly and efficiently, and designing for accessibility and immersion. Another large difficulty was the limited time during the hackathon, which meant that we had to prioritize functionality and creativity over perfection.
