Inspiration

We are all avid Wikipedia lovers and go on long spirals on there, but we wanted to find a way to better organize our Wikipedia searches and have more information on the quality of each article.

What it does

Our website allows users not only to access information on each Wikipedia article relating to viewership, credibility, coverage, and related links, but also to organize articles and save previous searches into project folders to be viewed later on. You can also explore trending pages on the home page, or choose 'I'm feeling lucky" to explore a random article.

How we built it

We built it using the Wikipedia and Wikimedia APIs, as well as React + Vite + Tailwind CSS, and Auth0.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into several challenges. A large challenge we had was being able to figure out the Wikipedia and Wikimedia APIs and what exactly each field represents. We also had challenges configuring the functionality alongside the UI, and having our interactive chart completely working.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built an application that we will all use in the future for our Wikipedia research sessions. We are proud of the multifaceted functionality our application exhibits in terms of the multiform data visualization as well as the focus on aesthetics and readability for the user.

What we learned

We learned how to use the auth0 package, the Wikipedia and Wikimedia APIs, and Tailwind CSS.

What's next for WikiPlot

We would love to link spikes in our interactive chart to news articles through web scraping. We would also like to look into adding other metrics for the credibility score we give to the articles.
