Inspiration
We were inspired by the community track to welcome educated discourse in our online communities.
What it does
Our website fact checks information.
How we built it
We used VScode paired up with several coding languages such as html, css, javascript, and the axios http client.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to break down the English language and determine every possible way a statement could be true or false. Due to this, our program would often be inconclusive on statements, so as not to assume and further the spread of misinformation. Parsing the results of the wiki API calls was also quite challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We had very little experience in the technologies we used, so we are super proud of being able to deliver a working prototype of our fact checker.
What we learned
We each learned how to develop in new coding languages, in addition to gaining an understanding of the inner workings of interactive websites and APIs.
What's next for wikiFactCheck
We hope to further the accuracy of our fact checker and gain a better understanding of what makes a statement true or false.
