Inspiration
We were inspired by our love for wiener dogs and wanted to put a fun twist on the typical space survival game. Instead of playing as a human trying to survive on an alien planet, we made a dachshund the main character whose name is Laika (Based off the first dog in space). We also drew inspiration from space exploration and survival games we had memories of and a mixture of 2d pixel games like stardew valley,.using those ideas we created our own version where a dog has to help its owner survive after a spaceship crash.
What We Learned
Throughout this project, we learned how to find, use and import assets, connect them to our code, and use extensions to improve our game. We used Visual Studio Code with the Claude Code extension to help develop Wiener Dog in Space. We also learned more about how different parts of a game, including movement, animation, sound, and interactions, work together.
How We Built It
We built Wiener Dogs in Space using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We used assets for the characters, environment, and objects, then integrated them into the game. We also worked on dialogue, sound effects, animations, and survival missions to make the experience more interactive. We used Claude Code to help us write and improve the code while developing the game.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was finding suitable assets for all the objects and characters in the game, especially music and sound effects. Modeling and animating the dogs was also difficult. Since this was our first project of this size, the complexity was extremely, and we had to figure out how to make all the different features work together. We also ran into issues with accidentally purchasing the wrong Claude subscription, which made the development process more complicated.
