Inspiration
The burden of chronic disease is impacting not only health services but also having significant socio-economic impact. COVID-19 has highlighted this risk even more. There is a need to have a digital platform to help people with such condition to manage their issues through digital interaction with practitioners and managing daily health and wellbeing routines. It is particularly relevant for people with chronic conditions as normal medical treatment alone is not enough to manage such problems and it needs behavioural and wellness support.
What it does
Our current platform provides long term solution for prevention and management of chronic conditions:
- The platform gathers medical, nutrition, lifestyle, behaviour data, personal goals data from users through interactive questionnaires and integrated technologies.
- Digital access and consultation with medical practitioners are available through the platform. Practitioners can also deliver prescriptions and recommendations digitally on Empeal.
- These data points are linked using unique algorithms to deliver health programmes with relevant targets and content for individual end-users.
- Users have access to practitioners and it is a gamified platform to ensure higher engagement.
- Detailed user level analytics show continuous shift in markers and KPI’s, which in turn enables users and practitioners to focus on key areas for better and quicker results.
How I built it.
This is PWA built using PEVN stack (i.e. PHP, ExpressJS, VueJS and NodeJS). VueJS is used as the frontend framework and NodeJS as backend. AI engine is build on PYTHON. This application is Universally Rendered with Server Side Rendering and is running on an Express server with Jest as the testing framework. It is being hosted on a AWS EC2 instance. A MySQL database is being used for data storage which is rendered using Laravel.
Challenges I ran into
Biggest challenge is in creating an AI engine to analyse behavioural patterns and suggest changes accordingly. We have built a solution that does meet the immediate challenge but we need to build a deeper and wider AI based recommendation-engine going forward.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
COVID-19 has created societal issue all over the globe. To bring up a team spread over different continents and produce a viable solution in such short time, which meets the need of the day, I think is really admirable for the team.
What I learned
Time management and the willingness of learning new skills in a very short amount of time encouraged the team to pursue this project. That being said, there are a plethora of things that we learned by participating in the competition. Effective use of time management skills meant that only a few and imperative parts of the business plan could be implemented and also dealing with people remotely was a challenging task. Moreover, with the help of new technologies like VueJS, this project helped gain immense insights on the state of application development.
What's next for WIDTH
We aim to take Empeal solution to more people. We will enable multiple languages on the platform as well as build an full machine-learning framework to make it more automated and scalable.
