Inspiration
We believe that one of the most critical problems in society today is that people are not engaging healthily with the environment around them in preference of individual online activities. Our notion was that we could associate the actions associated with a healthy lifestyle with a rewards system in order to incentivizes people to engage with their friends in the surrounding environment.
What it does
"Why Not" is essentially an online web application where users can view recommendations and sign up for healthy activities like rock climbing, biking, and hiking. There also is an events section where users can view local events near them like baseball games, concerts, and street festivals. Users can earn points and achievements for following through on activities.
How we built it
We built our platform through a combination of python, flask, and HTML.
Challenges we ran into
What we were able to complete during the 24 hour is a bare-bones model of our idea. Without any prior experience in web development, it was difficult for us to really capture our idea in the full-scope, but we tried our best.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team prides ourself in putting in our full effort, throwing ourself at this project with our might and creating something that we can share with others. We also have learned skills that we can take with us outside the hackathon and apply in the actual world.
What we learned
As a team of Freshman electrical engineers, almost everything we did during Tartan Hacks was a new and fascinating experience. Spending our caffeine-fueled night together in the 4th floor of the Hunt Library, we read resources, watched tutorials, and talked with each other as we cranked out or code. We all learned about web development using a framework of html, python, and flask. More importantly, we learned how to work together as a team with each of us contributing to the project.
What's next for Why Not
Depending on how our project is received, we plan on integrating our platform with existing social infrastructure like Facebook. This would allow us to use prior information about the users current interests to generate specific and relevant recommendations. By building off of Facebook, we can expand our platform into a multi-person network by allowing pathways for users to share and talk about activities with friends. Also we would like to create a mobile application as it would allow us the phone's sensors to measure user activity during exercise and validate event attendance using the GPS.
