Inspiration
We knew we wanted to do a project around a major "world-changing" topic/theme. After brainstorming for a little, we landed on education around global warming because it went along with our project ambitions, and gave us a way to spread awareness about an issue that we both value.
What it does
Our site is a visual representation of the effects of global warming and in particular greenhouse gases. It's a look into how we as a society have begun to dig our own graves over the last +200 years on a global scale. Additionally, it provides information on how hundreds of countries around the world can do their part to stop our own doomsday, as well as how we as individuals can make an impact, no matter how small.
How we built it
Our tech stack includes a Python backend using Flask, combined with a React frontend. For visuals we pulled from a few open-source components, the most notable being our globe that displays +200 years of carbon footprint data. Lastly, we used OpenAI to generate country-specific history surrounding their direct contributions to the global carbon footprint, as well as country-specific ways to mitigate the damage we've already dealt ourselves.
Challenges we ran into
We had a few challenges with Git, specifically losing a really important chunk of code pretty late into the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're extremely proud of our Timemachine Globe of Global Carbon Emissions. We're also extremely proud of how much we've accomplished in such a short amount of time.
What we learned
We learned that we will perpetually have a love-hate relationship with React lol. In all seriousness, we learned that perseverance is the most important trait to have for hackathons. Things will not go your way, especially when you least expect it. If you can stay strong and keep calm you can power through anything. Even a React project that has +100 critical vulnerabilities...
What's next for Why Not Save The World ?
What's next is to keep building the platform and keep informing more people about global warming. We hope that this project gains enough traction to garner petition signatures, environmental walks and overall more advocacy for green policy across the world. The reality is that there are so many bright minds and amazing ideas out there right now; But, what value do those geniuses and their truths have if they don't have a world to change? That's why we chose our project: to Save The World so more people can Change The World.
