The Problem (Inspiration)
Every founder starts with optimism. We fall in love with our idea, ignore weak signals, and spend months building something nobody wants. Accelerators and mentors try to help, but they’re expensive, scarce, and biased toward saying yes. Founders need a fast, honest, private sanity check before they commit time, money, and reputation to the wrong idea.
WhyNot? exists to cut through optimism bias and give founders the tough love they won’t get anywhere else.
What It Does
WhyNot? is a web-based startup reality check. A user describes their startup idea in plain text, and the tool returns a structured, no-sugarcoat analysis covering:
- Market & demand risks — Is the problem real? Is the market big enough?
- Execution & feasibility — Can this actually be built and shipped with the stated resources?
- Timing & trends — Is the wave coming, peaking, or already gone?
- Competition & moat — Who already owns this space, and why will you win?
- Founder blind spots — What are you assuming, ignoring, or underestimating?
The output is designed to feel like a brutally honest friend who happens to know a lot about product and startups.

How We Built It
- Frontend: Static site hosted on GitHub Pages (fast, free, and ship-friendly).
- AI analysis: Powered by a large language model that evaluates the idea across the five failure dimensions above.
- Design: Minimal, focused UX — one input, one button, one honest answer. No onboarding, no friction.
(Update this section if you used a specific stack: e.g., Next.js, Bolt, Lovable, Replit, Cursor, etc.)
Challenges We Ran Into
- Making the feedback feel honest but not discouraging — the tone has to be direct without being destructive.
- Keeping the analysis structured and actionable rather than generic startup advice.
- Shipping a complete, usable product in just a few days before the deadline.
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
- Shipped a fully functional, public-facing tool before the hackathon deadline.
- Kept the UX ruthlessly simple: describe your idea, get the truth.
- Turned a common founder pain point into a product that can be used immediately.
What We Learned
- The hardest part of building for founders is not the analysis — it’s the delivery. Brutal honesty needs empathy to be useful.
- AI is uniquely good at playing the “devil’s advocate” role at scale, but it needs strong framing to stay useful.
- Shipping fast means saying no to features; clarity is the feature.
What’s Next for WhyNot?
- Deep-dive reports with citations, market-size estimates, and competitor maps.
- Save & compare multiple idea drafts over time.
- Founder-mode toggle that adapts the tone from “tough love” to “investor memo.”
- Integration with Novus.ai to learn which ideas actually make users keep analyzing and which ones fall flat.
