Inspiration

Four aspiring young DubHackers are given Indomie packets on a Saturday morning. A glorious benediction, but it raises the striking question--how were they meant to cook this gift?

We weren't sure how to cook our instant noodle packets during the event, so we made a game to investigate this question!

Our DubHacks project is a tribute to childhood browser and Unity games, handmade with love and a classic charm. We were inspired by visual novels, top-down scrollers, simple puzzle games, and the instant noodle packets we received DubHacks morning.

What it does

You're a knight hired to the UW campus to help hackers cook some instant noodles. Go on a journey around a magical UW to retrieve ingredients and cook the perfect bowl. Solve puzzles, explore hand-drawn pixel-inspired art, and chat with little characters about strange things on the way!

How we built it

We worked in Unity for game development, using C# for scripts and Procreate to draw our visual assets and custom font. We used GitHub for version control and Visual Studio Community as our IDE.

Challenges we ran into

Scene changes were hard to handle because of how Unity handles screen transitions. It was tricky to integrate the ending cutscene into our game in a cohesive way that was compatible with WebGL.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're really proud of getting our puzzles, scenes, sprites, scripts, and dialogue in on time! It was definitely a time crunch, a collaborative effort, and a lot of fast learning to get the hang of Unity, but we think our game turned out super cute.

What we learned

We learned a lot about working in Unity, scripts in C#, and effective graphic design with Procreate. We also developed quite a bit of experience interfacing between them, practicing with export formats, version control, and best development practices to bring these platforms together in an effective game.

What's next for Why did you give us ramen?

There's many more places on the UW campus that we wish we had time to explore. Some prototype ideas that we hope to return to:

  • Collect spices from the Native Herb Garden and Life Sciences Building greenhouse!
  • Buy a bowl and utensils from the District Market!
  • Cook your noodles in an interactive, customizable cutscene!
  • Discover a literal easter egg and cook it for your final dish!

We'd also like to give our characters more dialogue, include more fully animated cutscenes, and show a more expansive world, but we're happy with the pocket we've developed today!
