What is the hallmark of sports fan conversation? Endless discussions of unprovable contentions. (Roger Maris would have taken Clayton Kershaw yard. Johnny Unitas was the greatest quarterback of all time. If Michael in his prime could have played against LeBron in his prime, the winner would be...)
Given the vast sums paid to athletes in the major American sports, a frequent and somewhat bitter refrain of the sports fan is "For [X millions of dollars], you'd think the guy could [run out a ground ball/shoot a free throw/complete a pass/etc. etc.]"
This app is intended to add an extra dimension to the everpresent conversation comparing our athletes' paychecks to their performance on the field.
The user enters an athlete's name (or two athletes to compare). Who's Worth It? calculates the player's performance in comparison to the league average, and also his compensation in comparison to the league average. It returns performance and salary statistics and computes a plus or minus score--in other words, reports whether or not he's worth it.
By adding sharing and social media links to the results screen, as well as an SI logo and link, Sports Illustrated can place itself in the center of thousands of fan conversations.
I ended up not having a team to help me develop the app, which was certainly a challenge. I decided that rather than giving up on the idea, I would wireframe it out and flesh out the concept.
