Inspiration
Every month on Hacker News there is a “Who Is hiring” thread where companies post job listings.
What it does
Turns the "Who Is Hiring" thread into an app with structured fields making it easier for job posters to submit data and job seekers to find data. The app would also make data analysis easier by removing the need for text scraping and parsing.
How I built it
The front-end was built using React. The backend was written using Python and Zappa to deploy API Gateway and Lambda functions to AWS. The datastore uses RDS Postgres.
Challenges I ran into
I'm not good at front-end development, although I'd like to get better, so that made development slower and more difficult. Also trying to get the infrastructure setup and everything deployed was a lot harder than I thought it would be.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Got something working at least locally.
What I learned
Getting a full stack up and running quickly is harder than I remember!
What's next for Who Is Hiring
1) Better UI design 2) Well defined API and data model for programmatic access to data and handling throttling and API keys 3) Trends dashboard for users to see which type of jobs or locations have the highest or lowest count for the month or to view changes over several months 4) Implement authn and authz for job seekers and job posters -- this would allow job seekers to post comments or favorite job postings and allows job posters to group postings by company or allow them to invite multiple poster for the same company (e.g., hiring manager account, recruiter account, engineer account)
