Inspiration
We we're inspired by solo social deduction games such as "Papers Please" and "You're Not My Neighbor", where players much make decisions based off of limited information and gut instinct. Connecting this to the space theme we explored what really made planets habitable. Not only this but the eerie unknown nature of space made for a great setting for a mystery solving experience.
Gameplay
Imagine this: you’re fast asleep on your way home from a space exploration mission when your ship is struck by a stray asteroid, damaging your O₂ system and leaving you in desperate need of repairs.
WhiteLIES is a mystery social deduction game where players interrogate one 'engineer' from each planet to find the real expert who can repair their ship. Using a radio transmitter and their microphone, players interact in real time with NPCs who have distinct personalities, determining who is telling the truth about their planet and ultimately landing there to fix your ship.
How we built it
- Google login for accounts
- Custom art for all of the UI and Icons
- Vite for the frotend
- Python for the backend
- NeonDB for the database
Challenges we ran into
- We pivoted ideas which made us lose a lot of valuable time starting from scratch
- Creating Custom UI took awhile
- Getting Vultr to work properly
- Balancing fun with skill curve
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Implementing ElevenLabs to create realistic sounding NPCs
- Creating a functional prototype that works as our vision intended, even being able to add more
What we learned
We used a lot of new technologies that we would never have thought of using before until this hackathon such as ElevenLabs, which was a core part of our gameplay loop.
What's next for WhiteLIES
Improving conversations of AI voices to have more unique attitudes. Another thing would be adding more world building and lore to the game.
