Inspiration

In 2017, Indonesia was the second-lowest performer in reducing food waste and the world's second-highest food waste producer. It produces an average of 300 kg of food waste per person each year. In developing countries, food waste is made in the supply chain process. One of the problems happens in the Small Medium Enterprise that tries to sell, but the production date is almost expired. They will often try to give discounts for the remaining products they hope will be bought by the customers. Until now, no platform helps SMEs to promote their deal of almost expired products to the public.

What it does

TendaPutih can support local food outlets to maximize their sale on surplus foods that are still in good condition by connecting patrons and local food outlets through a Digital Advertising Platform. Registered SMEs can post their surplus food at a discounted price with the expired date's picture. Our TendaPutih application will alert nearby users about the deals. TendaPutih helps our SMEs by creating digital media for SMEs to promote their offers. Besides that, they have done it directly at the store and reduced their opportunity cost. Our solution is also aligned with the SDGs. We hope that we can halve per capita global food waste at the retail (SDG 12.3) and also end hunger, and ensure access by all people by 2030 (SDG 2.1)

How we built it

We created our platform using React Javascript, and for the database, we used Firebase. We started with finding the idea that we want to develop, and after that, we decided what kind of features are included in the platform. We also tried to rank prioritized features. Next, we took tasks and developed the products, after finishing we took another task.

Challenges we ran into

Finding teammates is also challenging because most of us have a full-time job and have different times to commit to this competition. We ran into learning about the library of kendo react that we should use for this competition. We also tried to explore ideas that suited all of our team members.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For two months, we have succeeded in making this prototype. Our solution is also aligned with the SDGs. We hope that our White-Tent platform impacts these two SDGs: number 12 'Responsible Consumption and Production' and number 2 'Zero Hunger.'

What we learned

Most of the essential lessons that we learned are communication and time management. We need to manage our time wisely. Especially everyone has their own busy time because of the full-time job. We also need to have excellent communication to understand and tolerate other higher urgency from each other's life. In technical, it is really good to learn about kendo react and other Telerik's tool. We realized that it would be helpful one day, especially for specific components that are hard for us to build from scratch.

What's next for White Tent

There are a lot of things that can be improved in the White Tent App. First of all, we will make it so the owners of stores can register their shops and add products directly to our platform. We can also improve our customer segments for almost expired products and expired products to the insect farmer to improve the circular economy of foods. We will integrate our platform with the delivery system to improve customer experiences.
