🕯️ Inspiration

The web is full of whispers — data, signals, and code fragments that speak quietly behind the screen. We wanted to bring that eerie digital presence to life. Inspired by binaural horror games and the uncanny nature of AI, Whispers of the Web turns your browser into a haunted space where code itself starts to whisper back.

👻 What it does

Whispers of the Web is a fully immersive, browser-based horror experience that takes over the user’s screen and senses.

  • It uses 3D positional audio to make whispers seem like they’re coming from behind you.
  • The game listens to your input — and reacts to your fear.
  • As you type what you hear, it decides your fate: whether the presence retreats… or lingers.
  • At the end, the experience climaxes with a chilling visual scare before fading away — returning the user safely to reality.

⚙️ How we built it

  • Frontend: Vanilla JavaScript, CSS animations, and Web Audio API for immersive, directional sound.
  • Backend: Node.js/Express (for potential future story generation or secret event triggers).
  • Audio Design: Custom layered whisper samples and ambient distortion to simulate presence.
  • Hosting: Built for deployment on Vercel — lightweight, responsive, and self-contained.

🧩 Challenges we ran into

  • Getting 3D sound positioning correct so whispers actually feel “behind” the user.
  • Handling fullscreen transitions and browser focus (different browsers restrict certain API calls).
  • Balancing creepiness and safety — keeping it intense without crossing ethical or comfort lines.
  • Preventing GitHub from flagging the repo for secret keys during backend setup.

🏆 Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • Achieved a truly immersive browser horror with no external frameworks.
  • Perfectly synced audio timing and lighting flickers for tension.
  • Made a horror experience that feels alive using only code and sound.
  • Designed a minimalist but chilling UI that reacts to the player’s behavior.

🧠 What we learned

  • How to use the Web Audio API creatively for spatial and psychological impact.
  • How to design user flow and emotion using timing, silence, and subtle cues.
  • The power of minimalism — how a few whispers can create a full narrative.

🔮 What's next for Whispers Of The Web

  • Integrate AI-driven dynamic whispers that adapt to player responses.
  • Add procedural storylines that change based on choices or hesitation.
  • Introduce DeFi twist for Octant Hackathon — e.g., a “haunted vault” that reveals on-chain secrets as the game progresses.
  • Launch a multiplayer “ritual mode” where multiple users share the same haunting session.
