Inspiration
Social media is full of anonymous thoughts, confessions, and stories that spark conversation. We wanted to transform that idea into a lightweight social game where players don't just read anonymous whispers—they interact with them, contribute their own, and return every day for new challenges. Our goal was to build a game that encourages daily engagement while showcasing the community-driven spirit of Reddit.
What it does
Whisper Walls is a community-powered social game built on Reddit's Devvit platform using Phaser.
Players read anonymous whispers submitted by the community and choose the reaction they think fits best. Every game consists of 10 rounds, after which players receive a final score.
The game also includes:
- Daily Challenges that encourage players to return every day.
- Achievements that reward consistent play.
- Daily streak tracking.
- Community leaderboards.
- Anonymous whisper submissions that grow the game's content over time.
- Community whisper statistics.
- Sound effects, smooth button animations, and a polished mobile-friendly interface.
Every new whisper submitted by a player helps expand the experience for future players, making the game increasingly community-driven.
How we built it
Whisper Walls was built using:
- Reddit Devvit Web
- Phaser
- TypeScript
- Node.js
- Reddit Developer Platform APIs
The frontend was developed in Phaser using multiple scenes, including:
- Main Menu
- Game
- Submit Whisper
- Leaderboard
- Game Over
The backend manages:
- Whisper storage
- Leaderboard data
- Daily streaks
- Achievement progress
- Community statistics
We also added sound effects, progress tracking, smooth UI animations, and responsive layouts to create a polished experience across desktop and mobile devices.
Challenges we ran into
Building on a new platform meant learning the Devvit ecosystem while integrating Phaser smoothly.
Some of the biggest challenges included:
- Managing scene transitions between multiple game screens.
- Persisting player progress and statistics.
- Building community features such as leaderboards and anonymous submissions.
- Handling TypeScript errors during development.
- Debugging deployment and playtesting.
- Creating a polished mobile experience with animations and audio.
Each challenge helped improve both the game's quality and our understanding of Reddit's Developer Platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that Whisper Walls evolved from a simple reaction game into a polished community experience.
Highlights include:
- Community-generated whispers.
- Daily challenges.
- Daily streak system.
- Achievement system.
- Persistent leaderboard.
- Smooth animations.
- Sound effects throughout the game.
- Responsive mobile-friendly interface.
- Stable gameplay across repeated playtesting.
Most importantly, every player helps shape the game by contributing new whispers, making the experience richer over time.
What we learned
This project taught us how to build interactive games with Devvit and Phaser while designing features that encourage long-term engagement instead of one-time play.
We learned how to:
- Design retention mechanics.
- Build community-focused gameplay.
- Structure Phaser scenes effectively.
- Manage persistent game state.
- Optimize user experience with animation and sound.
- Deploy and test applications on Reddit's Developer Platform.
What's next for Whisper Walls
We plan to continue expanding Whisper Walls with additional community features, including:
- Community voting on whispers.
- Multiple game modes.
- Seasonal achievements and limited-time events.
- More reaction categories.
- Better moderation tools for submitted whispers.
- Rich player profiles and progression.
- Global and subreddit-specific leaderboards.
- Additional soundtracks, visual effects, and accessibility improvements.
Our vision is to grow Whisper Walls into a daily social experience that continually evolves through the creativity and participation of its community.
