Inspiration

This idea came from our experiences as first years. It was a difficult transition from high school, where everyone knows everyone and there is lots of continuity, to college, where friendships are fast-changing and you never meet the same person twice. Inspired by projects like Eat Together, we wanted to create an app that empowers people to meet and engage with their communities, via in-the-moment, spontaneous events. No one has to be alone when everyone is asking, WYA?

What it does

Where-You-App is a website that lets you create and view live events in your area, with a strong emphasis on embracing the spontaneity that begins lasting friendships and connections. If you have an hour of downtime between classes, open Where-You-App to see if anyone near you is doing something fun and join in! If you don’t want to eat lunch, study, or walk to class alone, throw down a pin and see who you meet!

How we built it

We built our site with TypeScript, JavaScript, and Next.js for the main website rendering functionality and backend logic. We used Leaflet to implement the map and its features. Finally, we created mockups of our frontend website design on Figma before bringing them to our site with CSS.

Challenges we ran into

We had several issues with integrating Leaflet and NextJS, especially when we were trying to get the coordinates of pins from a list, store them, and figure out how the user should input the location of events. Coordinating merges and pushes was challenging with relative inexperience on Git, especially when we were all working on similar parts of the app and there would be merge conflicts. However, it was a valuable learning experience on working with team-based coding projects.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are so proud of the interface and design of our site. We started our project by drawing several drafts and mockups to have a clear vision of what we wanted it to look like before splitting up into individual tasks, and we’re so happy that we could bring these separate components together back into the project we dreamed of.

What we learned

Teamwork and communication is key! Everyone has different specialties and skillsets, and programming and debugging is so much more efficient when you reach out and see who’s encountered a problem before. It can be difficult to work under time restraints, but it is very doable when we put our minds to it and encourage each other. We have proved to ourselves that we are capable of building so much within such a limited amount of time.

What's next for Where-You-App

We'd like to build a mobile app and integrate time-based features to the map, which we didn't get to in time. We also want to make a search bar to filter events, as well as create groups where only club members or students can see events. We would also likely implement more flexibility with events, such as the ability to edit/cancel events.
