Inspiration

We were inspired by the Domain.com challenge to create a website. Our original idea was to build a website that tracks where Native Americans can get free COVID-19 testing. As we worked on the project, the concept became "where Native Americans can find nearby testing clinics".

What it does

The website helps Native Americans find COVID-19 testing locations near them. The target audience for the website is Native Americans living on reservations and other tribe-owned lands across Utah. The user can pick which tribe they belong to and which reservation/land they live on, and the map will show them 4-6 nearby testing locations in Utah.

We have registered for the domain "wheretotest.online", although our website isn't hosted there yet.

How I built it

We built the website using HTML, JavaScript, and the Google Maps Javascript API.

Challenges I ran into

Although we got the wheretotest.online domain, we had troubles setting up a website host, so we weren't able to set up our website there.

From Gabby: This was my first hackathon, so I didn't have much experience working with a team on a project. I've also never worked with the Maps JavaScript API before, so it took me a while to get a workable map. A lot of the work wasn't actually coding, but researching Native American tribes and reservations, and inputting locations. Ultimately, I ran out of time to do everything I wanted to do with the website. Still, I'm happy with what I have finished.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

From Gabby: I'm proud that I figured out the Maps JavaScript API enough to put this website together, and I'm proud that our team now has something we can demo.

What I learned

From Gabby: I learned a lot about the Maps JavaScript API, and about using APIs and documentation. I learned that documentations and tutorials won't show you everything, and a lot of what you learn comes from messing with code examples and trial and error. I also learned about the process of building a website, and building a prototype for a hackathon.

What's next for Where to Test

First, we're going to host our website on our domain wheretotest.online so that others can use the site.

As far as website content, we could also implement our original idea, which was to track where Native Americans can get free COVID-19 testing.

If we have the time, there are also a few different features we could add to Where to Test to make it look and feel better. First, we'd like to add more information about testing locations, such as addresses and hours. We'd also like to expand the scope of the website to serve Native Americans from all across the country. Additionally, the website is very bare-bones right now, so we could add more graphical elements.
