Inspiration
We were inspired by the boredom and loneliness many people felt during quarantine as a result of COVID-19. We wanted to provide such people with a free game that would encourage friendly competition between their friends and themselves.
What it does
This program allows you to play the classic card game Old Maid without the hassle of a deck of cards or the need for an Internet connection. The game is played using the Python console, where the user can read the events that are happening in the game and pick one of the opponent's cards when it is their turn.
How we built it
We coded the game from scratch in the programming language Python. We used the random library in our project so that card decks can be randomly generated/ordered and the opponent can randomly choose a card from the player's deck.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to come up with and create a fully functional game in less than a day. We are also proud that we were able to communicate with each other effectively, which led to good collaboration on this project. Additionally, we believe our planning and Python coding skills improved as a result of partaking in this project.
What we learned
We were able to learn a bit about the processes of game development and working with other people on a collaborative coding project. As well, since StarHacks is one of the first Hackathons we have ever attended, we were able to gain valuable Hackathon experience.
What's next for Where's the Queen?
We hope to implement our program onto a website to make it more accessible for a larger audience. We also hope to improve the visual experience of the game by using Pygame as opposed to the Python console.
