Where’s My Money?

Inspiration

As broke college students with 2-digit checking account balances, we realized we needed to uncover the root cause of our financial struggles. Where’s My Money is the solution to track, analyze, and optimize our spending, so we can regain control of our finances.

What It Does

Where’s My Money is an all-in-one personal finance assistant that helps you track and manage your spending:

  • Receipt Storage: Capture and store your receipts digitally.
  • AI-Powered Analysis: Use AI to analyze receipts through interactive chatbot conversations.
  • OCR Recognition: Powered by Google Gemini, it recognizes text from receipts using Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
  • Receipt Capture: Easily snap a photo of a receipt through your webcam.
  • Fetch Digital Receipts: Automatically pull digital receipts from your emails.
  • Categorization & Filtering: Classify receipts by categories (e.g., groceries, entertainment, etc.).
  • Real-Time Statistics: Automatically updated graphs and charts showing your spending patterns.
  • Tax Assistance: Helps keep track of potential deductions for tax season.

How We Built It

  • Frontend: ReactJS with TailwindCSS for a clean and responsive UI.
  • Backend: Firebase for storing data securely.
  • AI & OCR: Google Gemini integrated for OCR and categorization of expenses.
  • Chatbot: Google Gemini-powered chatbot that provides personalized savings recommendations.

Challenges We Encountered

One of the biggest challenges was creating visualizations for real-time data from Firebase. Ensuring smooth data flow and accurate graphical representations took a lot of fine-tuning.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

  • User Interface/Experience: We're incredibly proud of the intuitive and seamless UI/UX, which makes it easy for users to manage their finances without manual data entry.
  • Data Flow: We achieved smooth, automatic data flow, so users don’t have to manually input receipts or expenses.
  • Real-Time Visuals: Interactive graphs and visuals update in real time, giving users instant insights into their financial habits.
  • Google Gemini Chatbot: We’re excited about the chatbot’s ability to analyze receipts and suggest actionable ways to save money.

What We Learned

Each team member learned new technologies during the project. We all gained deeper frontend development experience, especially with React and TailwindCSS, and expanded our knowledge of integrating AI for real-world applications.

What's Next for Where’s My Money

Looking ahead, we plan to expand Where’s My Money with exciting new features:

  • Tax Assistance: Add a tax calculator to help users with tax filing.
  • Bank API Integration: Direct connection to bank accounts for easier tracking of financial transactions.
  • Fraud Detection: Use email scanning to detect potential fraudulent activity.
  • Subscription Tracker: Keep track of recurring subscriptions and identify opportunities to cut costs.
  • Mobile App: Bring the platform to mobile for on-the-go access to your financial insights.
