Inspiration
My wife kept asking me things like, “Where did you put the bandages?”, “Where’s the cooler?”, or “Did you move the rice cooker again?” I realized I was spending way too much time looking for stuff I’d stored somewhere and forgotten about. That’s when I got the idea to create "Where is my stuff?"—an app to help me stop searching and start finding.
What it does
Where is my stuff? lets me log items I don’t use often, along with their location. Later, when I need something, I just ask my smart home assistant, and it tells me exactly where I put it. When I move, I use the moving mode to track what’s in each box—so I can ask about any item, and it tells me what box it’s in.
How we built it
I built the app using Bolt.new to quickly prototype the core features. I kept the interface simple and connected it to my smart assistant (like Google or Alexa). I added a lightweight backend to store item data and designed the voice interaction to feel natural.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was making the app powerful but still easy to use. Another was teaching the voice assistant to recognize everyday item names. Getting the moving mode to handle multiple boxes and updates took some experimenting too.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I’m proud that I solved a problem from my own life in a way that others can benefit from too. Connecting the app to a voice assistant and adding moving mode were key features that made the app really useful.
What we learned
I learned how often we forget where we put things—and how a bit of tech can make everyday life easier. I also learned a lot about voice integration, UX design, and thinking from a user’s point of view.
What's next for Where is my stuff?
Next, I plan to add photo logging, shared access for households, and smart storage suggestions. I also want to integrate barcode scanning and improve natural language understanding for even smoother voice interactions.
