Inspiration
We were thinking of a way to educate people on an important matter through an interactive game, and this recycle game popped into our heads.
What it does
This is a game that has the user catch falling objects in either a trash can, recycling bin, or yard trimmings bin. They get points for each item caught in a correct bin corresponding to the object. The user can earn up to 30 points, but this is pretty difficult as the game speeds up as the user is more and more accurate.
How we built it
We started off by building the raw game itself with built in pygame shapes to get the basic game logic down. Once the basic game was done, our team split up so that one person creates the GUI (title screen, ending screen, instructions), and the other created an API to retrieve random images and their categories. The sample images were downloaded from the web and stored in three directories corresponding to each category. Each image was carefully scaled down to the required size and made transparent. This entire game was made with object oriented design principles.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into small problems that required simple debugging. One common one was the game freezing, which was fixed by adding screen update commands, which is an easy thing to forget to add in pygame.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
This is the first time we created a game with a fully functional GUI that lets you redirect wherever needed. Getting this done in the span of 2 days is a pretty big accomplishment for us, as this the first time doing a coding project at this pace.
What we learned
We learned that effective collaboration can help speed up the process of getting projects done. We usually do projects by ourselves, but with the use of GitHub, it is very easy to have to people working on the same task.
