Inspiration
We didn't want to solve virtual problems, so we asked people on social media what are they biggest problems related to Coronavirus. One of the answer was as follows: "The biggest problem is to force people who think that the Coronavirus problem doesn't affect them to realize that the reality is different and they are responsible not only for their own health but also for safety and lives of all other people around them". We realized that the human ignorance is one of the most important problem in current situation and we wanted to focus on preventing the virus spreading instead of fighting with its consequences.
What it does
Our project is a mix of game and interactive story, where the main character wants to meet with his friends ignoring the national-wide lockdown. His goal is to avoid infected people by observing their behavior - there are no gamelike sickness indicators since in the real world you never truly know who is sick. After he reaches the goal he realizes that the truth was that actually he was the only one who was infected. Player is able to replay the game again but in the next run he'll see how his infection spreads against other people.
How I built it
We managed to create it with Phaser.js framework and host it on netlify. We didn't have a graphic designer in our team so we've used simple graphic assets bought from the internet.
Challenges I ran into
We're not game developers and we had to quickly learn a completely new technology (Phaser.js) in a single day.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We've made the playable prototype in about 48 hours from scratch.
What I learned
- new technology (Phaser.js)
- what's the most time consuming in game development
- how to use game elements to tell a story
What's next for Whenyouleavehome
We would like to extend the mechanism of calculating final consequences. We would like to add more data about potential virus spread along the short future and some randomized stories of people who got into troubles because of the infection which started from the player - death, unemployment, financial crysis etc. We thought about adding new interactions to the world, like simulations of disturbing real life situations along with the sources where player can learn more about them. We would like to also add some extra interface and game description.
