Inspiration
With growing access to vaccines and boosters across the world, we were curious about investigating the question on everyone's mind: when might the pandemic end? Using global vaccination data from Our World In Data, we set out to create an interactive notebook predicting when different countries would reach 'herd immunity'* via booster vaccination, given current rates of vaccination so far. In this global pandemic, we sink or swim together; right now Burundi's lack of access to vaccines may pose problems for a true end to the pandemic via vaccination. More vaccines need to flow to countries like Burundi which, under the current scheme of things, are set for an alarmingly late end to the pandemic.
* While there is not clear consensus on what level of population vaccination is required for herd immunity - somewhere between 70-90% is frequently mentioned. We defined herd immunity at 90% of population vaccinated based on discussion from Nature and the American Medical Association.
