Inspiration

Inspired by the catastrophic landslide and sudden formation of a barrier lake in Guangfu Township, Hualien — a moment when nature’s silent strength turned into unstoppable force.

What it does

This short documentary captures the fragile boundary between land and water, documenting the formation, overflow, and collapse of the Guangfu barrier lake through aerial and time-sequence visuals.

How we built it

Combining real-world satellite data, AI-generated visual reconstructions, and cinematic drone-style compositions to recreate the event with realism and emotion.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing scientific accuracy with visual storytelling, while conveying both the scale of destruction and the quiet sorrow of nature.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We transformed a local disaster into a visual narrative that evokes empathy and awareness of Taiwan’s fragile mountain ecosystems.

What we learned

Nature’s beauty and fury coexist — documenting it demands respect, precision, and emotional truth.

What's next for When the Mountains Weep - video competition

To expand the project into an educational and environmental awareness series, connecting real-world data, local voices, and visual storytelling to preserve memory and inspire action.
