Team X presents you to an economical wheelchair fastener that attaches to any surface in a bus. The arms are made of rubber to provide friction and the rotating device aids in the fastening process.
Inspiration: During one of our teammates normal mornings to classes, they observed a person with disability getting on the bus. They noticed the bus driver having to get off their chair and assist the person in need. Not only was this process extremely time consuming for the people on the bus as they were running late for the classes, but it was also equally discomforting for the person on the wheelchair. At that point, the team member noted that the current system in our busses faces a huge issue: not only is the system not fixated well and causes the person in need to constantly move to and fro, but it also delays the ETA for all the passengers. This incident needed a change which Team X ought to bring through their design.
What it does: The wheelchair fastener uses a rather simple mechanism to hold the person on a wheelchair on a bus. It involved rubber arms with a lot of friction to hold the person in space and has a rotating device which the person can access manually accoriding to their need. This eliminated the dependence of the person with need on the bus driver and also doesn’t affect the ETA of the passengers on the bus by a lot. Lastly, it’s easy to use and can get attached to any flat vertical surface on the bus.
How we built it: Fusion 360
Challenges we ran into: Eliminating and categorizing ideas that should be eliminated and those we should move forward with. Additionally, we also had a hard time deciding which software to use for doing CAD as a bunch of us were experienced with different softwares.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: Effectively meeting together and coming up with a practical idea that could be implemented, using our CAD knowledge to the fullest.
What we learned: Team work makes a dream work!
What's next for Wheelchair fastener: We sincerely hope we can bring the design to the UIUC current bus system and improve the process.
