Inspiration

We wanted to see how we could implement GenAI into games—specifically Generative AI, not just traditional AI. We already have things like line-following AI or enemy-player bots, but we wanted to explore how GenAI could work with wordplay in small, interactive games.

What it does

We release a game where users compete against each other in a dystopian world. The goal? Convince the AI that you deserve to win—and, in the process, survive. It's a battle of persuasion, creativity, and wit, all judged by the AI.

How we built it

We built it using Reddit’s framework called Devvit. It’s a sandboxed environment that allows games to be hosted directly on Reddit, enabling tight community integration.

Challenges we ran into

There were two major challenges:

  1. Because Devvit is sandboxed, we couldn’t inspect or manage the types of server calls being made. External fetch calls were especially hard to implement.
  2. It was difficult to maintain session logic due to limitations within the environment, making it tricky to persist state between different parts of gameplay.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of how we brought together collaboration and AI in a fun, lighthearted game. The wordplay in the game adapts impressively to user inputs, showcasing creative interaction that feels meaningful and entertaining.

What we learned

We learned how to build AI-powered games from the ground up. More importantly, we gained insight into which aspects of gameplay GenAI handles well, and where it falls short. This understanding will guide future iterations of our work.

What's next for Wheedle

We want to introduce more dynamic user personas. For example, one idea is to incorporate a gambling mechanic—allowing users to raise or fold—with unique personas and dialogue for each player. This will add a new layer of depth and personalization to the game.
