Inspiration

Hi, I'm Dennis, and I want to make the health insurance experience better before you have to use it. We spend so much money on health insurance each month (it's my third highest non rent bill between cell phone and internet) and yet for the longest time I tried my hardest not to use it still.

Then, one year, I found out my insurer had a group purchasing agreement with my gym and I was eligible for almost $30/month discount. Then Divvy came around...boom, another discount.

Challenges I ran into

After I left my startup turned corporate job, I had to buy health insurance for myself. It was the first time I could pick more than the 3 options my employer gave me. Someone in my family (a small business owner) referred to me to his broker. I quickly found that I knew WAY more about the plans than he did, and he really was just trying to take my order and sell me as many packages as he could.

How it works

I don't think health insurance is best served with a direct to consumer experience. The formulas are too complicated and unless you use it all the time (no one wants that), it's just hard to conceptualize the networks, the discounts, the copays, and coinsurances.

I think brokers and agents should do more than just "order take" and need to take it to the next level. They should be actively involved in creating the healthy communities they're serving and making people healthier directly. Sort of like prepatient engagement meets an ACO.

What's next for Whealthy (who we're looking for)

Finding people who want to figure out what health insurance should provide for them when they're not going to the doctor.

I'd like to work with anybody that has a bright mind, lots of energy, and a positive outlook on life. I've been a technologist in the revenue cycle space from the provider, and could use someone with domain knowledge on the payer side and anyone who might think the prepatient ACO concept is interesting. Also, people with marketing and sales experience to work on distribution would be great. And, of course, mobile developers and designers are welcome.
