Inspiration

We were inspired to create this app because, especially as a college student, it's difficult to manage your social life and classes/work at the same time. Having friends, or just a little company sometimes, is crucial for your mental and physical health. "Having good company around should make you feel relaxed, comfortable, and keep your mind positively engaged".

What it does

WhatToDo is an app that will give you events near you that fit you. WhatToDo starts off by asking you a few questions to categorize you under the Big 5 Personality Traits. (read more at https://www.verywellmind.com/the-big-five-personality-dimensions-2795422#:~:text=These%20five%20primary%20personality%20traits,openness%2C%20conscientiousness%2C%20and%20neuroticism.) Then, WhatToDo uses a web scraper to search the web for events depending on your location to find your idea of a fun night.

How we built it

We used Python for everything. To build the web scraper, we used BeautifulSoup. To create the user interface, we used tkinter.

Challenges we ran into

All of us were not too familiar with creating a user interface that's friendly to the user and collects the information we need. Chanu stepped up and took on the challenge of crash coursing tkinter and spending the night experimenting until she got it right.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're all proud that we showed up and tried our best. It was difficult to stay focused for 24 hours, but we made sure to motivate each other and join fun breaks/workshops.

What we learned

We are now much more experienced with Python. Alyssa and Rodrigo learned a lot about BeautifulSoup and how it extracts and parses HTML. Chanu learned how to use python AND how to make a user interface. Maysa played the overall motivator role and experimented with UI/UX. Maysa did a lot of background work like requirements and the questions which we needed to ask to collect the specific data needed for our app.

What's next for WhatToDo

Currently, we are in the early stages of development and this will only be able to work if you are in Arlington, Texas. We would like to optimize our program and make it usable for everyone, anywhere, at anytime.
