Inspiration

We were inspired to make WTW!? by an event that occurred before LanHack, where I was going to the SPAR shop located on campus. As the room was warm and the blinds were drawn, I assumed it would be similar outside. However, I came outside to see it was raining and very cold. By using our device, we can now easily determine if the weather and temperature is similar to that of the room you're in.

What it does

WTW!? Uses a temperature sensor from the 37 SENSOR KIT from Elegoo to record the internal temperature of the room to within +/-0.5 degrees, this data is then used in tandem with a call to the OpenWeatherMap Weather API which retrieves both outside temperature and conditions. This data is then used to turn an LED red, blue or green to indicate the amount of difference in the temperature outside to inside. The conditions can be also be checked using the webpage we made.

How we built it

The program is mainly created using C# and HTML, both independently and together in the form of Razor CSHTML web pages.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into some issues both in terms of what API to use and team members as we had to shed a member due to circumstances beyond our control. As well, we had to end early last night due to an emergency at a member's flat.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of the fact we managed to both receive and send data from the sensor to the website using a backend HTTP request.

What we learned

We learned of the options for a weather API, how to create CSHTML sites and how to manage our time given a hard deadline.

What's next for WhatTheWeather!?

While we may continue WTW!?, as of now we are putting the project on indefinite hold as we focus on our university assignments, though we are proud of the work we managed to achieve in 24 hours and learned many things along the way.
