Inspiration

The auto-tweeting Stanford tree interested our team and led us to develop a Twitter bot that would interact with Twitter users. Also, we wanted to provide the perfect tool for a post-COVID world where we can rediscover our favorite places and find new ones too!

What it does

Just mention @WhatIsAround on twitter, include one of the supported hashtags (#restaurants, #activities, #museums, #hotels, #covid19), and the bot will respond with 2 recommendation for each category. The bot also includes a friendly interface that tells people how to set up their location.

How I built it

This Twitter bot runs on Javascript, communicates with the Twitter API using twit, and uses fetch to make API calls to Triposo, where we gather our destination data from.

What's next for WhatIsAround

We had so many ideas, but only so much time. These are improvements we would like to make on our project: Troubleshoot duplicate tweets, Be able to interact with more users, Integrate more hashtags option for the users, Make more language options available, Gather user location beyond profile information (geolocation from tweets), Music suggestions depend on where you are, More sophisticated text processing capabilities, Universal location support (API specific improvements)
