Inspiration
I was inspired to create WhatEXT because I wanted to make it easier for people to learn about and manage file extensions. File extensions are an important part of the computing world, but they can also be confusing and frustrating. WhatEXT aims to provide a comprehensive and user-friendly resource for all things file extensions.
What it does
WhatEXT is a website and mobile app that provides information about file extensions, including what they are, how to open them, and how to convert them. WhatEXT also includes a database of over 100,000 file extensions, with information on each extension's purpose, associated programs, and MIME types.
How I built it
I built WhatEXT using a variety of web development technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. I also used a number of third-party APIs, such as the Google Search API and the MIME Types API.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges I faced in building WhatEXT was compiling a comprehensive and accurate database of file extensions. There are a lot of different file extensions out there, and it can be difficult to keep track of them all. I also had to make sure that the information I was providing was accurate and up-to-date.
Another challenge I faced was making WhatEXT user-friendly. I wanted to make sure that it was easy for people to find the information they needed, even if they didn't know much about file extensions.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of the fact that WhatEXT has become a valuable resource for people who want to learn about and manage file extensions. I'm also proud of the fact that WhatEXT is easy to use and navigate.
What I learned
I learned a lot in the process of building WhatEXT. I learned more about file extensions, web development, and user experience design. I also learned the importance of perseverance and hard work.
What's next for WhatEXT
I'm planning to add a number of new features to WhatEXT in the future, including:
A file converter A file extension search engine A blog with articles about file extensions and related topics I'm also planning to expand the WhatEXT database to include more file extensions and more information about each extension.
I'm excited to see what the future holds for WhatEXT. I hope that it can continue to be a valuable resource for people who want to learn about and manage file extensions. https://whatext.com/
