InspirationInspired by the real-world barriers patients face when trying to navigate complex hospital systems, locate verified accessible facilities, and arrange reliable medical transportation in Gwinnett County. What it doesThe Medical Accessibility System is an all-in-one digital hub for Gwinnett County residents that provides:Verified Healthcare Directory: Over 16 local hospitals, urgent cares, dental clinics, and orthopedics with verified accessibility data (parking, ramp inclines, automated doors). Ride Gwinnett & NEMT Dispatch: A streamlined booking tool for ADA paratransit and private lift-van medical transport. Indoor Micro-Navigation: An interactive spatial map that plots accessible indoor routes while dynamically bypassing stairs or broken elevators. Custom Accessibility Profiles (DUAP): Personalized mobility and sensory settings that tailor routes and system alerts to individual needs. How we built itFrontend: Built with HTML5, Tailwind CSS, and custom JavaScript for real-time filtering, interactive canvas mapping, and accessibility toggles.Accessibility Enhancements: Integrated high-contrast mode overrides, screen reader live announcements, and Web Speech API text-to-speech voice guidance.UI/UX Architecture: Designed with clear section tabs, telemetry logs, and a dedicated emergency dispatch workflow.Challenges we ran intoDesigning a responsive canvas-based indoor mapping system that visually demonstrates node-based routing and obstacle-bypassing in real-time.Structuring comprehensive local medical data specifically tailored to Gwinnett County infrastructure (Lawrenceville, Duluth, Snellville, Norcross, etc.).Ensuring the UI remained fully compliant with high-contrast, screen reader, and speech synthesis standards.Accomplishments that we're proud ofSuccessfully integrating a fully functional Ride Gwinnett paratransit and NEMT dispatch simulator with automated driver instructions. Building 16+ real, verified Gwinnett healthcare facility entries complete with custom parking and entrance specifications. Creating an inclusive, accessible user experience featuring live activity logging, high-contrast themes, and one-touch emergency hospital assist. What we learnedThe importance of micro-navigation details—such as door width, ramp incline angles, and elevator reliability—in physical medical accessibility. How to combine multiple civic services (public transit, hospital directories, and emergency helplines) into a single unified web application. What's next for "what should we make our team name"Expanding the directory to cover more surrounding counties across Metro Atlanta.Integrating live API feeds from public transit authorities for real-time paratransit vehicle tracking.Partnering with local Gwinnett healthcare networks to crowdsource real-time accessibility status updates for facility elevators and ramps.
