Navigating the myriad of activities and experiences available in a bustling cities can feel overwhelming, especially without a clear plan or guide for activities. Nathan and Jordan knew this struggle too well while making an itinerary for a one day excursion to San Jose—the indecision, the unfamiliarity of the area, dreading the long hours planning in the dorm rooms. That’s why we created "What's the Move": a revolutionary app designed to simplify and enrich your day-to-day experiences. Imagine having a personalized itinerary at your fingertips, whether you’re exploring new places, recommending a new coffee shop, or planning a weekend getaway to San Jose. Our mission? To seamlessly connect you with activities that align with your interests, ensuring every move is well-spent and memorable.

💻 What It Does

"What's the Move" transforms the way you plan your day by providing tailored suggestions and creating interactive, engaging itineraries. From local gems to spontaneous adventures, our app curates activities that match your preferences, making decision-making effortless and enjoyable.

⚙️ How We Built It

Technology Stack:

  • React.js + Next.js + Tailwind CSS: For responsive and modern UI styling for our frontend.
  • Express.js + Node.js + Clerk + Prisma ORM: For a robust backend.
  • OpenAI GPT-4-Turbo: For generating personalized recommendations and crafting detailed itineraries.

🧩 Challenges We Encountered

  • Figma to React conversion issues.
  • Storage user data in the proper way.
  • UI design.
  • Prompt Engineering.
  • Translating response into UI
  • High pressure deadline.

🎉 Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

Despite a tight development timeline, we successfully built a comprehensive and user-friendly app from scratch, addressing a real need for efficient short-term planning. We're particularly proud of our in-depth parameter system, which delivers highly personalized itineraries that adapt to user feedback and preferences.

📚 What We Learned

We kept asking ourselves: "Is this something that a user wants?" This project really exercised the importance of empathy. We initially built what we found an inconvenience, however, we learned the importance to really "place ourselves in another shoes." Building a user centric design while leveraging AI to integrating multiple aspect of an itinerary taught us truly what a user needs and wants. Our team gained valuable insight on end to end, from intuitive designing to effective functionalities.

❓ What’s The Next Move?

Enhanced Personalization:

  • We plan to further refine our query prompting and UI. A massive part of generating an itinerary is to make it not only functional but also unique and presentable. We would love to offer even more personalized and context-aware recommendations, improving the app’s ability to suggest activities that perfectly match user moods and schedules; while delivering an effective yet digestible list of activities.

Expanded Collaborative Features:

  • We've ideating quite a lot of features. Since we're two college kids always down to find the next move, we intend to introduce collaborative tools which allows your friends and family to plan and modify together, making group outings way easier to coordinate.

Advanced Mobile Capabilities:

  • Our bigger goal is to expand into mobile development. Translating our basic features on to mobile devices allows us to include more advanced features such as offline access, push notifications, widgets, and integration with calendar apps to fit plans and itineraries into users' existing schedules.

Exclusive Partnerships and Deals:

  • To bring users closer to the authentic, off-the-beaten-path adventures, "What's the Move" will leverage partnerships with local businesses, event organizers, and travel services. By integrating with: - Google Places API for detailed local data, - Yelp API for reviews and ratings, - Eventbrite API for event discoveries, we aim to offer exclusive deals and highlight quirky, lesser-known spots. These strategic partnerships will enrich our recommendations with genuine, localized experiences.

Analytics and Insights:

  • Future updates will introduce an analytics dashboard to provide users with insights into their activity preferences and trends, helping them make informed decisions and optimize their daily experiences. More themes are to come as we are exploring on certain demographics and niches!

With "What’s the Move," planning your day becomes more than just organizing—it’s about discovering and experiencing the best your city has to offer, effortlessly and enjoyably.
