Inspiration
The inspiration for this app came from observing how modern lifestyles heavily lean towards digital interactions, often at the expense of real-world experiences. Recognizing that especially younger generations might not explore their cities as much due to digital distractions, our app aims to motivate both young and old to engage with their surroundings more intimately. By incorporating elements from Yelp's API, MongoDB for data management, and React Native for a seamless mobile experience, the app not only suggests interesting places in the city but also gamifies the experience. Users earn their way up from being Newcomers to recognized Locals, incentivizing exploration and real-world interaction, making it an engaging way to truly connect with one's environment and community. This approach addresses the concern that residents might not truly know their city while using technology to enhance, rather than replace, real-world experiences.
What it does
Our platform enables locals to share their favorite spots to visit, dine, and engage in activities, creating a vibrant tapestry of recommendations for others to explore. Whether it's uncovering hidden eateries, discovering unique attractions, or seeking out exciting activities, our platform empowers users to find the best of what their area has to offer. Visitors can also use the platform to discover new and exciting places to explore, making their travels more enriching and memorable. By facilitating this exchange of recommendations, our platform fosters a sense of community and connection, encouraging users to discover and celebrate the richness of different locales.
How we built it
We began by brainstorming various ideas and discussing their feasibility within our chosen tracks. After selecting our current concept, we delved into detailed discussions about the app's envisioned appearance and functionalities. Tasks were then delegated among team members, covering UI design, frontend architecture, database setup, and data acquisition. Collaboration was key, with frequent discussions ensuring alignment on even the smallest details that could impact the final product.
Challenges we ran into
We encountered challenges with merging branches due to the divergent products created by team members, making it challenging to reconcile differences and integrate changes smoothly. Additionally, adopting new technologies like React Native presented a steep learning curve for all team members, requiring us to adapt quickly and learn on the fly to effectively implement them in our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to have delivered a polished final product, showcasing our ability to step out of our comfort zones and embrace new technologies. Overcoming the obstacles we encountered along the way was a significant achievement, and we're pleased to have built a project that reflects our passion and dedication.
What we learned
Throughout the project, we gained valuable insights into establishing connections between frontend and backend systems, designing database schemas, and crafting visually appealing applications. These learnings have equipped us with a deeper understanding of software development and have enhanced our abilities to create seamless and user-friendly digital experiences.
What's next for What's the Move?
Next for "What's the Move?" involves enhancing user experiences with tailored views for different user levels including potential limited perks. This includes providing sneak peeks at recommended mystery places and personalizing recommendations based on user interests and locations. We aim to continually refine the app's features to offer a more personalized and engaging experience for our users.
