As plant lovers, we’ve often found ourselves wondering: “What kind of plant is this?” Whether walking in a park, visiting a friend’s home, or even browsing a local nursery, identifying unknown plants is a common curiosity. We realized that while plant identification apps exist, they’re often cluttered, slow, or locked behind paywalls. So we decided to build a free, simple, and fast AI-powered plant identifier that could also educate users about plant care, toxicity, and native environments. How to train and fine-tune image classification models using transfer learning (ResNet and MobileNet). Using TensorFlow Lite and ONNX to optimize models for mobile deployment. Leveraging plant databases and APIs for enrichment (like Trefle.io or Plant.id). Creating a smooth image upload and preview workflow in React. Managing asynchronous prediction pipelines and feedback UX in real time.
