What’s Poppin’ was inspired by one universal struggle — how chaotic it can be to come up with cohesive, creative ideas when planning an event. From holiday parties to picnics with friends, I found myself juggling multiple tabs for menus, themes, and games. That scatterbrained process sparked an idea: what if an AI assistant could make event planning feel fun, focused, and fast?

Enter Poppy — your energetic, slightly chaotic creative co-planner who helps turn “I don’t know what to do for this party” into a fully fleshed-out celebration. What’s Poppin’ shows how AI can empower creativity, accessibility, and fun for everyone. It transforms complex brainstorming into an enjoyable, beginner-friendly experience powered by on-device AI.

Whether you’re an event planner, a student hosting a themed night, or someone who just wants a little creative spark, What’s Poppin’ helps you plan something unforgettable — with a touch of Poppy’s signature flair.

Each event is saved as a PartyBoard — a dynamic, AI-generated chat space on an event where Poppy helps you plan everything from themes to activities, making creativity effortless and enjoyable.

What it does

What’s Poppin’ is an AI-powered event planning assistant that helps users instantly generate detailed, creative party concepts — all through an interactive, chat-style interface. Think of it as texting your personal event stylist who brings your ideas to life.

Here’s how it works:

Describe Your Event 🎉 Tell Poppy what you’re planning — e.g., “We’re hosting a Met Gala night” or “I want a cozy friendship picnic.”

AI-Generated Party Boards ✨ Using Hugging face AI APIs, Poppy creates a personalized Party Board — complete with themes, decorations, menu ideas, and activities.

Iterate with Chat Commands 💬 You can expand any section with simple prompts like:

“More food ideas 🍴” → adds creative dishes or drinks

“More games 🎲” → adds fun group activities

Summarize & Share 💌 When you’re done, Poppy can turn your board into a shareable invitation or rewrite it in different tones — elegant, playful, or formal.

Save & Revisit 💾 All your boards and chats are automatically saved locally, so you can pick up right where you left off anytime.

What’s Poppin’ keeps all planning private, fast, and personal — no servers, just your browser and a bit of AI magic.

How we built it

What’s Poppin’ is a fully client-side web app built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, powered by Hugging face AI APIs.

These APIs allow all AI text generation to happen on-device, keeping user data private.

A lightweight local storage system ensures conversations and Party Boards persist across sessions.

The interface includes dark/light mode, dynamic auto-saving, and tone rewriting features for invitations.

Poppy’s personality was fine-tuned through iterative prompt engineering to make her responses feel both helpful and delightfully chaotic.

Challenges we ran into

Working with experimental browser AI features came with hurdles —managing origin trial tokens, testing, autosaving boards. Ensuring seamless local persistence between sessions was also tricky. The biggest creative challenge, though, was striking the right balance between Poppy’s personality and usability — making her fun without losing focus.
