Inspiration

The inspiration for What’s Next? came from an experience involving someone I know who experienced a significant rise in blood pressure due to fear before a medical procedure. As a result, the procedure was postponed, and her condition later worsened.

This experience made me realize how fear and uncertainty can affect a patient’s healthcare journey. Patients may feel anxious before surgery or other medical procedures because they do not fully understand what to expect or what steps they need to follow.

I wanted to create a platform that helps patients feel more informed and prepared by making essential healthcare information easier to access.

What it does

What’s Next? is a patient portal designed to help patients navigate their healthcare journey step by step. It brings together appointment information, medical procedures, and patient profile details in one simple platform.

Our goal is to make it easier for patients to find relevant information, understand their upcoming healthcare steps, and feel more prepared for their medical journey.

How we built it

We built our prototype using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. HTML structures the pages, CSS provides the visual design, and JavaScript adds interactive functionality.

The platform includes a home page, appointments section, procedures section, and profile page. We focused on creating a simple interface that makes navigation clear and accessible.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was coordinating tasks among team members and integrating the different parts of the project. We also faced difficulties identifying and fixing programming errors after implementation.

To address these challenges, I used AI tools as a programming assistant to help me understand errors, explore possible solutions, and improve my debugging skills. This helped me learn from mistakes and become more confident in writing and improving code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of turning a real healthcare concern into a functional prototype. We brought together the main patient portal sections in one interface and created a platform that reflects our goal of making the healthcare journey easier to navigate.

We are also proud of improving our technical problem-solving skills and learning how to coordinate tasks and work through development challenges as a team.

What we learned

We learned the importance of teamwork, task coordination, debugging, and designing technology around real user needs. We also learned that healthcare solutions should consider not only appointments and procedures, but also the uncertainty and concerns patients may experience.

Our future plans include improving the platform’s guidance features, providing reliable procedure-related information reviewed by healthcare professionals, and exploring integration with hospital systems.

We also aim to explore ways to help patients identify their concerns and access relevant information that addresses their questions, while encouraging them to discuss medical concerns with healthcare professionals.
