Inspiration

We wanted to use the IBM-Watson visual recognition API to make cooking easier for users, while simultaneously reducing food wastage.

What it does

"What's for dinner?" has both a hardware and software component. When you either search for a recipe or inquire about your inventory, the cameras installed in your fridge/pantry take photos, and uses the visual recognition API to determine what food and ingredients you have in stock. The app will then search the recipe you want to make for you, and let you know what ingredients you need to get to make the dish.

How we built it

The UI was built using JavaFX and Scene Builder, while the back end was done using Java and the Watson visual recognition API

Challenges we ran into

Only having 36 hours to complete the app was a significant challenge that we had to overcome.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was the first time that our team had ever constructed a UI!

What we learned

We learned both the incredible capabilities and limitations of the Watson visual recognition API, while also learning about how the back end and front end merge to create a functioning app.

What's next for "What's for Dinner?"
