Inspiration
It's a constant problem: after a long hard day at work or school, you come home to having to decide what to cook. Instead of choosing a recipe quickly and going with it, you spend hours pondering over choices, end up making something quick but unhealthy, or choose to eat out. Almost everyone, ourselves included, has the problem of deciding what to eat. Unfortunately, when prioritizing convenience or what we want to eat, groceries and pantry items that aren't involved in simple recipes end up expiring and being trashed before being used. With 40 million tons of food going to waste every year, it's clear that there needs to be a more effective solution to finding healthy and delicious recipes using what you already had in the pantry.
What it does
What's Cooking allows users to have a quick and easy way to find recipes that use ingredients they already have in their pantry, prioritizing suggested meals by what expired first. By offering options to automatically import what's in your fridge using a receipt scanning feature, our app will automatically log what you bought and the expiration date of all items. From there, you'll be able to insert preferences for what you want to eat that day. Finally, our app will automatically provide recommended recipes for you to make that use food that will expire soon and match what you want to eat. Additionally, this product notifies you when your food is about to expire so you do not forget. With a freemium model allowing for increased customization of recipes and filtering by certain diet types, What's Cooking is clearly the best way to find tasty recipes that use ingredients you already have while reducing food waste.
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS to create the website. Additionally, we used basic Javascript to add animations and allow for transitions between pages and more website functionality. We plan to code the app in the later stages of the product development.
Challenges we ran into
Given that this was a one day hackathon, time was one of our main challenges. However, we were able to overcome this obstacle by sticking to the project and getting everything done as quickly as possible. Additionally, we do not have much coding experience, so learning HTML and CSS along with Javascript largely in one day was a bit hard. The workshops definitely helped though!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of this idea. Not only did we finish coding our first website, but it came out looking quite smooth and with some basic functionality that goes towards our ultimate product goals. We feel there is a lot of area for growth and expansion.
What we learned
We learned a lot more about creating websites, including the styling aspect and we also learned how to create a presentation that grabs the viewer’s attention. We also learned how to ideate a product quickly and design a MVP within a short time span, allowing for user research and quick feature development.
What's next for What's Cooking
We plan to create an app and add many new features, include increased recipe customization. We also would like to partner with grocery stores and have a free and premium version that will allow us to turn this into a fully fledged business.
