As a New Englander, I'm always fascinated by folk stories about the region. I'm also intrigued by and sensitive to the industry of fisherman who are affected by climate change and overfishing. I found parallels between their industry changing and the sometimes spooky, encroaching presence of artificial intelligence. Whatever industry you belong to, it does seem like everything is being upended these days in unexpected ways.
I started this piece as a test to see if I could generate realistic people within a distinct setting in a documentary format. One of my favorite movies is The Blair Witch Project, so I loved the idea of turning the setting of Maine fishing village and the men who inhabit it into a chaotic horror short.
Biggest challenge was creating a faithful Mainer accent by typing in prompts phonetically. "Are" became "aw" and so on.
This is my ode to my spooky homeland.
