Inspiration

I wanted to build a simple app using ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS API for Javascript to know what is below me. Since I'm a geology nerd, I wanted to start its use with surficial and structural geology.

What it does

This simple app allows you to search an address and get the nearest surficial and structural geology to see what rocks are just beneath you as well as nearby faults in the area. Data comes from USGS from the Living Atlas.

How we built it

The webmap was built with ArcGIS Online. The application was built in ArcGIS API for Javascript. A little bit of HTML was used to add in the title and other information.

Challenges we ran into

I wanted to build a pop up from scratch using the API as well as build the app without using the WebMap function. However, it was quicker and easier to use the WebMap function since edits can be done with ArcGIS Online.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is a quick map easily conveys what is the surficial and structural geology of an address. The simplicity of the application is what I am most proud of because users can easily understand how the application works.

What we learned

The WebMap function can save a lot of time especially for those that are familiar with GIS but new to the API.

What's next for What's below me?

Further development can be used for other purposes like underground wiring, pipelines, hazards, bedrock geology, and the list goes on and on!
