Inspiration
The inspiration for this documentary began during my visit to Ballarat, Australia. While walking through the Botanical Gardens, I came across a small heritage cottage and a board summarizing the life of Adam Lindsay Gordon. The story on that board struck me immediately from the hardship, the exile, the poetry, the grief, and the tragic end of a man who helped shape early Australian literature. I was touched by the emotional depth of his journey, and I felt compelled to retell his story through a modern visual language. Using AI filmmaking allowed me to breathe cinematic life into the fragments of history and imagination surrounding Gordon’s life, and to honor a figure whose struggles still resonate today.
What it does
This documentary presents a stylized, emotional retelling of Adam Lindsay Gordon’s life from his early years, to his time in the military, to his exile, the rise of his poetic voice, the birth and loss of his daughter Annie, and the heavy grief that shaped his later work. The film blends historical interpretation with expressive AI-generated imagery to capture the emotional essence of Gordon’s experiences rather than presenting a strict factual documentary. It invites viewers into the internal world of a poet whose creativity was born out of turbulence, loss, and longing.
How we built it
The film was created using a multi-step AI and editing workflow: MidJourney: Used to generate still images representing scenes across Gordon’s life childhood moments, landscapes, emotional states, and symbolic visual interpretations of his poetry. MidJourney Style Reference: Applied to maintain consistent colors, and atmosphere, ensuring the visual language remained cohesive. KlingAI: Used to animate the still images, creating motion from static frames to bring the story to life. Adobe Premiere Pro: Used for assembling the scenes, refining pacing, transitions, and overall structure of the documentary. ElevenLabs: Used to generate the voiceover narration. CapCut: Used to enhance sound design adding background music, environmental sound effects, and emotional audio cues to elevate the overall mood. This combination of tools allowed for a layered audiovisual experience, merging AI creativity with traditional editing craftsmanship.
Challenges we ran into
Maintaining consistent character design across different scenes and emotional states was one of the biggest challenges, especially when using generative models. Ensuring the film felt genuinely emotional and not “AI-generated” required thoughtful editing, careful narration, and attention to pacing. Balancing AI creativity with respect for sensitive themes grief, mental health struggles, and suicide required a delicate and empathetic approach.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Transforming a historical figure’s emotional journey into a visually striking AI-enhanced film that preserves the sensitivity of his story. Crafting AI-generated imagery that still feels human, intimate, and emotionally grounded. Successfully developing a cohesive visual language that blends poetic symbolism with historical atmosphere. Bringing renewed attention to a literary figure who often goes unnoticed, and offering a modern interpretation of his inner world. Demonstrating that AI filmmaking can be used not just for spectacle, but for expressive, meaningful storytelling.
What we learned
AI is a powerful tool for reimagining historical stories when visual material is limited or nonexistent. Emotional storytelling requires human intention and empathy. AI can assist, but the emotional truth must come from the creator. Blending traditional editing techniques with AI animation can result in a compelling hybrid documentary style. Exploring Gordon’s life deepened my understanding of his poetry, his struggles, and the complexities of portraying sensitive historical narratives ethically.
What's next for What Remains: Adam Lindsay Gordon
I plan to develop a longer, expanded version of the film with more detailed scenes from Gordon’s life, exploring additional turning points and poetic interpretations. More broadly, this project has inspired a larger creative direction: creating a series of AI-enhanced historical documentaries about overlooked poets, thinkers, and scientists using AI tools to revive and reinterpret the emotional landscapes of figures whose stories deserve renewed attention This film is only the beginning of a growing body of work dedicated to merging history, creativity, and modern AI-driven storytelling.
