Imagine a financial crystal ball at your fingertips. Our app lets you simulate your financial journey by tracking hypothetical job scenarios, investment decisions like entering and exiting stocks, and paying for everyday expenses like utilities. With an interactive calendar view, you can see exactly how much money you'd have on any given date and where you’d stand financially at the end of the simulation. By providing a safe, hands-on way to experiment with financial scenarios, our app empowers users to improve their financial literacy, make more informed investment decisions, and better manage their money. This is financial clarity reimagined.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind this project is to help people make better financial decisions by providing a tool that allows them to visualize the long-term impacts of their choices. Financial literacy is a critical skill, and we wanted to create something that makes it accessible and engaging for everyone.

What it does

The app is a personal financial simulator that lets users simulate job scenarios, investment decisions, and expenses. Users can enter details like when they started or ended a job, when they bought or sold stocks (such as the S&P 500), and recurring expenses like paying for utilities. With an interactive calendar, users can see exactly how much money they would have on any given date and where they would stand financially at the end of the simulation.

How we built it

The app was built using modern web technologies, including React and Node.js. We focused on creating an intuitive interface for data entry and powerful algorithms for calculating financial trajectories.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was managing the complexity of entering and exiting investments, especially when users want to buy or sell varying amounts of shares at different times. Another significant challenge was handling time-based scenarios effectively—ensuring accurate calculations while accommodating flexible schedules and inputs. Time management for feature development during the hackathon was also tricky.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud to have created a functional and user-friendly tool that addresses a real-world need. Seeing the app accurately predict financial outcomes and provide users with actionable insights is a significant accomplishment. Additionally, overcoming the complexity of investment simulations and time-based scenarios was a rewarding challenge.

What we learned

We learned a lot about building financial models, working with time-sensitive data, and creating a seamless user experience. This project also taught us the importance of prioritization and adaptability when dealing with complex requirements in a limited time frame.

What's next for What If? Personal Financial Simulator

We plan to continue adding features to enhance the app. Future updates may include deeper investment analysis, support for more asset types, advanced budgeting tools, and mobile app integration. The goal is to make the simulator an indispensable tool for anyone looking to master their finances and plan for the future.
