Inspiration

We often wonder how our lives might have unfolded if we had made a different choice - a different college, career, city, or passion. "What If... Machine" was inspired by that quite, human curiosity.

Instead of optimizing for productivity or answers, this project explores reflection, imagination, and emotional resonance through AI-generated alternate life paths.

What it does

The "What If... Machine" lets users input a single hypothetical life decision (e.g., "What if I studied art instead?").

With one click, the app generates:

  • A "plausible day-in-the-life narrative" (morning to evening)
  • Fictional yet realistic details grounded in the user's context
  • A calm, book-like reading experience focused on immersion

The goal isn't prediction - it's exploration.

How I built it

  • Frontend: React + Vite + Typescript for a fast, modern UI
  • UI/UX: Tailwind CSS with a notebook-style design and subtle animations
  • Backend: Node.js + Express API for AI orchestration
  • AI: Text generation via external inference APIs
  • Architecture: Clean separation between UI, API and generation logic

The experience was designed to feel like opening a page from an alternate life journal.

Challenges I ran into

  • Handling "API quota limits and provider changes" during development
  • Ensuring AI outputs were "structured, plausible, and emotionally coherent"
  • Balancing "technical reliability" with a soft, narrative-driven UX
  • Integrating text generation into a single seamless flow

Each challenge required rapid iteration and thoughtful fallback strategies.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Creating a "fully interactive, end-to-end AI experience"
  • Designing an interface that feels reflective rather than transactional
  • Successfully combining storytelling and introspection in a meaningful way
  • Shipping a complete product under tight hackathon constraints

What we learned

  • Good AI products are about "experience design", not just prompts
  • Users connect more deeply with "plausible fiction" than raw outputs
  • Clear structure dramatically improves AI reliability
  • Constraints can lead to more creative solutions

What's next for What if... Machine

  • Multiple narrative tones (hopeful, nostalgic, bittersweet)
  • Expanded visual styles and personalization
  • Deployment as a public web experience

"What If... Machine" is just the beginning of exploring lives we almost lived.
