Inspiration

We're a passionate group of software engineers interested in making it easier for individuals to reclaim control over their digital lives.

With personal data being shared in the various applications that are being used on a daily basis. What data is being stored and what data we entrust to the different organisations, sometimes as a side-effect of application sign-ups for instance, is often overlooked.

We feel it is vital that individuals are empowered to access such data and understand what data is being stored as well as how it is being used. However, the process involved is tedious and can entail digging on each organisation's website for the relevant contact information as well as drafting a message in a specific manner.

Searching from a community-populated database, anyone can choose a company they are interested, fill in their personal details and receive a generated Subject Access Request. As the database of companies is community-populated, any company that does not exist in the database can be added. This means everyone benefits from the database being grown and simplifies the process for the next request.

With this tool, anyone can easily generate a Subject Access Request and regain back control of their own personal data.

What it does

Retrieve your data from organisations who know by creating simple Subject Access Requests without the hassle.

How I built it

Using Go with various javascript frameworks.

Challenges I ran into

Every language in the stack was a new language for us. Integrating and getting to grips with each language took time. As well as running and mainitaining VPS for our server in the backend meant longer setup times and configuration.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

What I learned

  • Go
  • React
  • Bootstrap
  • REST APIs
  • Web/Email server backend.

What's next for What Don't I Know

  • Personalised user login pages with dynamic interaction of Subject Access Requests for companies.
  • Community-curated and moderated database of companies with updated entries for previous requests, possibly through crowd sourcing.
  • Statistics of Subject Access Requests for specific company for previous Subject Access Requests to that company.
